Dynamic Electrical Systems Powers Up at Launchbox

Matt Carroll, founder of Dynamic Electrical Systems, and Launchbox member tells us how splitting time between field and office work early in his career as an electrician wired him for success with his own business.

How did you get your start?

I got into the electrical apprenticeship program for IBEW 236 in 2013. I was lucky enough to land with a smaller contractor, State Electric, for my first assignment. Not only was I exposed to a wide variety of work, but they would also have me come into the office and learn estimating when we were slow. I had always liked math, and I thought it would be beneficial to learn the bidding side of the business in case I ever decided to start my own company.

When the owners were ready to retire, they set me up with a little bit larger of a company, Tech Electric. While at Tech, I was also brought into the office to bid work when things slowed down. In 2019, shortly after I completed the apprenticeship program, I decided to start Dynamic Electrical Systems LLC. I was solo for a year, working in the field during the day and handling bidding and billing at night.

Eventually, I couldn’t keep up with both the field and the office work, so I asked my cousin, Mark Donohue, if he wanted to be my partner. We had talked about it for years—me running the office, him running field operations—and he decided it was time to make the leap.

Tell us a bit more about Dynamic Electrical Systems.

Right now, we have six employees and do commercial and industrial electrical work. That includes power generation, power distribution, branch circuits and lighting, access control, telephone and data systems, fire alarm systems, process control, and temperature control.

We do a lot of pump stations, wastewater treatment plants, temperature control for schools, parking lot lighting, and office remodels. We also install specialized equipment for many different industries, both the power and control sides. Our plan over the next year or so is to grow to eight to ten employees and continue increasing sales like we have every year since we started.

How did you connect with Launchbox, and what has your experience been here?

We’ve been in Launchbox since November 2024. I had operated out of my garage and basement for the first five years of Dynamic. Mark sent me the link for Launchbox and I immediately knew it was the perfect bridge to get us from working out of the house to eventually buying or building a shop. Launchbox has been amazing to date. The common areas, bathrooms, loading dock, and hallways are always kept in immaculate shape, which creates a great atmosphere to work and socialize in. The loading dock not only has dock levelers, but also carts, pallet jacks, and a forklift we can use as needed. That makes receiving and sending shipments much faster than what we were accustomed to. The cafeteria is always stocked with coffee, juices, soda, yogurt, chips, and snacks, and it’s all free for the members. If there’s ever an issue with a door, a light fixture, or any kind of damage, it gets taken care of immediately. Even if it doesn’t interfere with daily operations, they still fix it right away. That shows they want the place in peak shape now and in the future.

But honestly, my favorite thing about Launchbox is the smile my girls have when they’re here. My five- and eight-year-old daughters love walking the halls, going to the cafeteria, checking for packages, and helping me with little projects. It has a fun feel to it, and we couldn’t be happier.
